A Once a Year Brunch

The McMillin restaurant can be booked for a wedding farewell brunch however they typically only open for dinner service for the general public. While staying at the resort this past June, we were told for just one week only the restaurant will be open for brunch. If there was a moment to try out their breakfast options, this was it.

It was the 4th of July week while we were staying at the resort and the restaurant wanted to experiment and offer a three course brunch menu. The cheapest item they had was $25 and went up from there but I felt the cost was justified since we might being hosting a farewell brunch after our wedding (and the resort doesn’t offer tastings for weddings).

As we were seated, the menu broke down like this:

First course is a choice of breakfast pastries, fruits and cheeses from a buffet nearby followed by a late morning cocktail. The entree course is a choice of a variety of breakfast classics from benedicts to omelets. Mr. Mustang loves egg benedicts and he decided to try the ‘sampler’ which consisted of three different benedicts involving crab, smoked salmon and classic ham. I am a fan of croque madame and noticed they only had a croque monsieur on the menu. I asked them if they could turn it into a madam considering the only difference is a poached egg on top. To both our surprise, the kitchen refused saying they didn’t want to do any changes to the menu. Mr. Mustang and I theorized the real reason they refused is because the chefs working the line didn’t know what a croque madam was and was too embarrassed to admit it.

While we waited for our entree course to arrive, we made a plate from the buffet area. The lighting in the dining room was dimmer than my camera would like so the shots I tried to take are pretty terrible to say the least. The shots from our table came out great though considering we had the full support of the rising sun to light our plates. Accompanying my appetizers was a strawberry mimosa served in a coupe glass that complimented my meal beautifully.

We were two of only maybe six other diners in the restaurant so our entrees came out within 20 minutes of ordering and both looked fantastic. I thought having the chefs prepare a croque monsieur on a ciabatta bread was different but made it slightly difficult to cut into. Mr. Mustang’s plate was excellent with the crab benedict being my favorite.

While there, I was able to take full shots of the main dining room, the bar and the private room upstairs. We were originally thinking of doing a rehearsal dinner at Shipwreck Beach however depending on how many guest arrive the day before, we might have it here instead.

Overall I liked the meal but for the price we paid, I’m worried that we might not do a farewell brunch after all if it cost this much. I felt the food was perfectly prepared, cooked and presented but was a little annoyed that I couldn’t make any changes (like adding a poached egg). Mr. Mustang and I are always going to be fans of this restaurant and was glad that we got to experience brunch service that only occurs once every year.
