Logan Lucky for the Win

I must admit, I was a little wary when I first saw the trailer in theaters. It didn’t look bad but the story line that was pitched to me wasn’t something I typically watch. Flash forward to Mr. Mustang and I debating what movie to see this past weekend and the one getting the best reviews was Logan Lucky. We said screw it and made a date night of it.

Logan Lucky is one of the best movies of the year.

Yeah, I said it - Logan Lucky is fucking fantastic. I actually want to keep this review short and have no spoilers because I want others to walk into the theater or rent the film knowing little to nothing about this movie.

Rough summary of the movie takes place in rural North Carolina where Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) is a blue collar worker that had a promising career in his youth but due to an injury, is left struggling to find a steady job. After hearing his ex-wife is preparing to move to West Virginia with their daughter, he decides the only way to stop her is to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway to pay for an attorney to fight for full custody. Certain characters get brought in to help with the heist like his one-arm brother Clyde (Adam Driver), his sister Mellie (Riley Keough), a convict Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), and many more. Plans are made, equipment gets set up and hi-jinks of all kinds occur in this hilarious and very original American heist comedy.

Mr. Mustang and I were blown away by all the performances in the movie - especially Daniel Craigs. I’m no expert in accents but Mr. Craig truly sold his performance and I want to see more of him play non-James Bond roles. Every character was extremely well written, funny and full of life where all the actors truly brought out the best in their roles. The writing also deserves a shout out. There were several times where I had no idea where the scene was going to take me and was exciting to be totally immersed in the story all while forgetting you are watching a movie.

There were some scenes that won't age well for the movie (like the bit about Game of Thrones) so time will tell if later generations want to see this film but not get certain jokes. My only criticism was towards the end where I felt they gave too much screen time to the FBI agents but it pays off in the end...kind of.

Overall, this was a beautifully well put together film where the acting was fresh yet funny, the directing was spot on and the writing was truly original.

Grade: 9/10
